Fractional CPO or part-time co-founder: which does your startup need?
A fractional CPO (chief product officer) is a senior product leader who works with you part-time and owns one thing: the product. A part-time co-founder works across product, design, go-to-market and early hiring, and does the work alongside you rather than leading a team. If you already have a product team that needs senior leadership, a fractional CPO is the better fit. If you're pre-launch or early and the founders are doing everything themselves, a part-time co-founder usually covers more of what you're missing.
What a fractional CPO does
A fractional CPO brings senior product leadership to a company that can't yet justify, or find, a full-time one. Typically they:
- set the product strategy and roadmap
- decide what gets built and in what order
- lead and coach the product and design team
- set up how the team works: planning, research, metrics
- represent product to the board and investors
The role assumes there's a team to lead and a product to manage. It works best once you have something live, users to learn from, and at least a few people building.
What a part-time co-founder does
A part-time co-founder fills the gaps a founding team usually has in its first months. That means working on the product, but also on the things around it:
- deciding what to build first and what to leave out
- designing and shaping the first version
- positioning, and how you explain the product to customers
- getting to the first users, and fixing what stops them signing up
- first hires, and the story you tell investors
The role assumes there isn't much of a team yet. The work is hands-on: making the decisions with you and doing the work, not directing other people.
Side by side
| Fractional CPO | Part-time co-founder | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Product only | Product, design, go-to-market and hiring |
| Best stage | Live product, a team in place | Pre-launch or early |
| Way of working | Leads and coaches the team | Does the work alongside the founders |
| Typical length | Ongoing, often a year or more | A fixed period, such as 90 days |
| Main output | Strategy, roadmap, a stronger team | A first version, positioning, first customers |
What each costs in Dubai
Both are usually paid as a monthly retainer. A part-time CPO in Dubai typically costs AED 22,000–37,000 a month, depending on seniority and days per week. That's for product leadership alone; design, go-to-market and hiring support would be extra.
Part-time co-founder arrangements vary more, because they're less standard. Mine is AED 7,500 a month for 90 days, and I'm open to a mix of cash and equity. Whichever you choose, be clear about the days per week, what's included and how either side can end it.
How to tell which you need
You probably need a fractional CPO if:
- your product is live and you have a team building it
- the team is busy but not sure it's working on the right things
- you need someone to set strategy and hold the roadmap
You probably need a part-time co-founder if:
- you're pre-launch, or have only just launched
- the founders are doing everything, and product isn't your strength
- you need help deciding what to build, not managing who builds it
- you also need help with positioning, first customers or first hires
If you're somewhere in between, start with the part-time co-founder model for the first few months. Once there's a team and a live product, a fractional or full-time CPO becomes the natural next step, and you'll know exactly what to look for.
Questions founders ask
Is a fractional CPO the same as a product consultant?
No. A consultant usually reviews and recommends. A fractional CPO is part of the leadership team and accountable for the product's direction over time.
How many days a week does a fractional CPO work?
Commonly one to three days a week, depending on the size of the team and the stage of the company.
Can a part-time co-founder become a full co-founder?
Sometimes. Working together for a fixed period is a good way to find out whether you want a longer partnership, without committing a large share of equity up front.
Do I need a CPO before I raise?
Not usually. Investors in early rounds look for a clear product direction and evidence that users want it. Someone senior can help you get there without holding a CPO title.
I work with early-stage founders as a part-time co-founder for 90 days at a time. If design is what you need most, see the UI/UX design subscription. Book a call and we'll work out which fits.
